Response to Stefan's Oil Issue

What's Good Stefan. I liked the part where you mentioned on having to deal with surviving, and our energy problem. The way we survive now, is through collaboration with each other. Everyone has a role supporting each other. For an example, the farmer milks the cow, the trucker brings the milk to the factory, the workers put the milk in cartons, truckers then bring it to the city, and the markets sell the milk to the city. Then the city makes the farmer's T.V and chairs etc. We all rely on each other yet, there's people who make a lot more money depending on their jobs. Like those big corporations you were talking about, and the idea of profit. About being a group of people. We may be "united" now, but when the group of united people fails in surviving as a group. Members will either die or start to leave to find better chances of survival. And eventually people "are going to have to resort to survival skills." Depending on how well they scavage for food and shelter, will be the quality of how they live. Most people believe that the people in the group that they're rolling with will look out for them, and support them at times of need. But when these supporters have the deal with the same problems, they aren't going to bother to help others when they can't even help themselves. I wonder what you think might happen to our country, when it cannot support it's population and guarentee it's survival. I find it important that your father understands oil peak and the direction where the world might be heading. People are ignorant and they all think that the "higher ups", and economists and the government, will come to the rescue of this resource problem. The truth is, when shit hits the fan, its going to be a free for all, and if a father had to choose to feed his son or his co worker. He'll drop his obligation to help his friend and instead feed his son. So this means that the government, might as well pack their bags and book a ticket to a private island where they can have the best means of survival for themselves when permanent collapse happens. The job of politicians are to control and organize a population. A job is made so people can survive in a society. When the society collapses, then the job is no longer needed to survive. And since the government official's society collapsed, there would be no reason for them to keep their jobs. You dig what I mean? Well I just wanted to see what you think would happen when shit like this really happens. What will be the first thing you would do Stefan? Im always thinking about what I would do when the whole world ends. And who would I save? My son or my mother in a river. Life is complicated.

Comments:
Nian,

Yet again you have made some really important points, and very clearly. I especially enjoyed your argument about the current economic interdependence between workers in this system - and how it is parasitized by the capitalists, and how it may disintegrate due to peak oil.

I also agree that even friendship networks and community support may be threatened by serious hardship. I think they might also be strengthened, depending on the attitude people take. Here in the U.S. the dominant attitude seems to be "Look out for #1" - but maybe your friendship group is different?

The first thing I have done, when faced with this theory, was to try to figure if, when, and how it would affect me and us.
